WWII Photo Negatives German Buchenwald Gallows Prisoners Tank Bombed Sign Bodies (2024)

I recently acquired a grouping of WWII items from the son of Byron Waring which included a wooden box sent from Germany in 1945, a couple of his civilian cameras, and a German aerial camera. The box was loaded with rare photographs and negatives.Sgt. Byron Waring was part of a small group of men who were involved in the planning of the invasion of fortress Europe in 1944. He was with the 9 th AACs, 30 th Photo Reconnaissance Squadron. I have his unit booklet that was printed in Germany late 1945 which outlines the units vital work with Army intelligence. This small unit flew missions over Normandy and Germany in order take photos in which maps would be made for the invasion. Maps were made for the 1 st Infantry Division for the invasion, and through the entire invasion until the wars end. Byron Waring is mentioned on page 19 of the booklet as being a "plotter". He landed on Omaha Beach approx. 2 weeks after the invasion with his mobile "map making" unit which was a converted, and camouflaged British Leyland Retriever. He went across France, Belgium, and into Germany making vital maps for the 1 st Infantry. This was a very, very small group of men in which the war could have never been won without! I have his Army papers and discharge. He was listed as an Army Photographer and was trained as such.The wooden box I received from Byron' s son has been untouched since the 1940s. It contains a lot of aerial photographs. It also contained photos of his Army Air Corp "photograph" unit from England, to their landing in Germany, across France, and into Germany. Box also has several carefully folded packets of his private negatives. The photos document nearly everything to the "t" as outlined in the booklet. There are US spy-plane photos with unusual "nose-art", German tanks, trucks full of German prisoners, the bombed out airfield the unit stayed at, and a trip to Paris. The most disturbing "packet" of negatives is one marked "concentration camp". I had prints made, and they are of Buchenwald. Apparently Byron went there and took some "official" photos for the Army, and private photos for himself. I even have the camera he took them on.I will be selling in groups as I get time. I am separating because many people have different interests. BARKLEY BECAME TRUMANS VICE PRESIDENT. AFTER STUDYING THE BARKLEY PHOTO AND MY GROUPING, I BELIEVE THE BARKLEY PHOTO WAS TAKEN BY BYRON WARING. HE TOOK PHOTOS FROM THE IDENTICAL SPOT AT THE IDENTICAL DISTANCE SHOWING SOLDIERS IN THE SAME AREA. WARING HAD HIS OFFICIAL ARMY CAMERA AND HIS PRIVATE CAMERA [WHICH I HAVE]. THESE PHOTOS WERE TAKEN WITH HIS PRIVATE CAMERA. ONE OF WHICH I BELIEVE TO BE TOTALLY ICONIC. A BUCHENWALD PRISONER STANDING BELOW THE INFAMOUS BUCHENWALD GALLOWS. HE IS STANDING NEXT TO A US SEARGENT AND THE NOOSE CAN BE SEEN STILL HANGING OVER THEIR HEADS. A MAKESHIFT TABLE HAS JARS ON IT MADE OF WHO KNOWS WHAT. THE BODY PILE AND THE GALLOWS ARE THE ONLY TWO PHOTOS ON THIS STRIP TAKEN INSIDE THE CAMP. THE REST ARE ON THE WAY OR AFTER LEAVING THE CAMP SHOWING SIGNS SUCH AS BAD BERKA. ONE LOOKS LIKE A US SHERMAN TANK. THE PRINTS I HAD MADE WERE MADE INCORRECTLY BECAUSE THE PLACE THAT PRINTED THEN DIDNT HAVE THE PROPER SIZE PAPER. THEY ARE GOOD ENOUGH TO SHOW WHAT IS ON THE NEGITIVES. THEY ARE THE ONLY PRINTS I HAD MADE AND WILL BE INCLUDED IN THE AUCTION.
