Rohingya refugees mark the anniversary of their exodus and demand a safe return to Myanmar

  • By SHAFIQUR RAHMAN and JULHAS ALAM - Associated Press

Tens of thousands of Rohingya refugees have rallied in a southern Bangladeshi coastal district where they live in sprawling camps, marking the seventh anniversary of their mass exodus from Myanmar. They gathered in an open filed at Kutupalong camp in Cox's Bazar district on Sunday demanding safe return to Myanmar's Rakhine state. They carried banners and festoons reading “Hope is Home” and “We Rohingya are the citizens of Myanmar.” On Aug. 25, 2017, hundreds of thousands of refugees started crossing the border to Bangladesh amid indiscriminate killings and other violence in Myanmar. Myanmar had launched a brutal crackdown following attacks by an insurgent group on guard posts. Bangladesh hosts more than 1 million Rohingya refugees.

Paralympic social media accounts front traditional media with edgy take

  • By ANA ESCAMILLA - Associated Press

Paralympic athletes and even the International Paralympic Committee are raising their visibility on social media with content focusing on and even making fun of their physical disabilities. While outside commenters have found the images and videos in poor taste, athletes themselves are leaning in to highlighting their abilities alongside their disabilities. IPC spokesman Craig Spence says Paralympians have “a great sense of humor. They’re not wrapped up in cotton wool and protected from society.” The Paralympics begin in Paris on Aug. 28.

Harris campaign says it has raised $540M, sees surge of donations during DNC

  • By AAMER MADHANI - Associated Press

Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign says it has now raised $540 million for its election battle against Republican nominee former President Donald Trump. The campaign has had no problems getting supporters to open their wallets since President Joe Biden announced he was ending his campaign and quickly endorsed Harris. The campaign said it saw a surge of donations during last week’s Democratic National Convention in Chicago where Harris and her vice presidential running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, accepted their nominations. Campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon wrote in a memo released by the campaign on Sunday that immediately after Harris' DNC acceptance speech on Thursday, the campaign saw its best hour of fundraising since launch day.

What to know about the heavy exchange of fire between Israel and Lebanon's Hezbollah

  • By JOSEPH KRAUSS - The Associated Press

Israel and Lebanon’s Hezbollah have launched their heaviest exchange of fire after months of strikes and counterstrikes, raising fears of an all-out war that could potentially draw in the United States, Iran and militant groups across the region. By mid-morning Sunday, it appeared the exchange of fire had ended, with both sides saying they had only aimed at military targets. Lebanese authorities said the Israeli strikes killed three people, while there were no reports of casualties on the Israeli side. The exchange of fire does not appear to have set off a long-feared war, but tensions remain high.

Taliban vice and virtue laws provide 'distressing vision' for Afghanistan, warns UN envoy

  • AP

A top UN official is warning that the Taliban’s new vice and virtue laws provide a distressing vision for Afghanistan’s future. The laws include a requirement for a woman to conceal her face, body and voice outside the home. Roza Otunbayeva, who heads the U.N. mission in the country, said Sunday the laws extend the “already intolerable restrictions” on the rights of women and girls, with even the sound of a female voice in public apparently deemed a moral violation. In remarks broadcast Sunday by state-controlled broadcaster RTA, Vice and Virtue Minister Mohammad Khaled Hanafi said nobody had the right to violate women’s rights based on inappropriate customs.

China opposes US sanctions on firms over alleged ties to Russia's war efforts

China has expressed its opposition to the latest U.S. sanctions on Chinese companies over their alleged ties to Russia’s war in Ukraine, saying it would adopt necessary measures to safeguard the rights and interests of the country’s businesses. The U.S. on Friday announced sweeping sanctions on hundreds of firms in Russia and across Europe, Asia and the Middle East, accusing them of providing products and services that enable Russia’s war effort and aiding its ability to evade sanctions. The Ministry of Commerce in China on Sunday said it firmly opposed the U.S. putting multiple Chinese companies on its export control list, saying the move would disrupt global trade orders and rules.

Flash flood on Indonesia's eastern Ternate Island leaves 11 dead

  • By RIFKY ANWAR and EDNA TARIGAN - Associated Press

A flash flood following torrential rains on Indonesia’s eastern Ternate Island has left 11 people dead. Search and rescue teams working with local residents on Sunday recovered 10 bodies in Rua village in North Maluku province. The team was still trying to retrieve one more body, said an official from the island's search and rescue agency. The flash flood swept away residential areas and cut off the main road and access to Rua. Dozens of houses and buildings were buried in mud. Heavy rains cause frequent landslides and flash floods in Indonesia, where millions of people live in mountainous areas or near floodplains.

This bird species was extinct in Europe. Now it's back, and humans must help it migrate for winter

  • By BOBBY HARDY and STEFANIE DAZIO - Associated Press

The Northern Bald Ibis, or the Waldrapp, once soared over North Africa, the Arabian Peninsula and much of Europe. They were hunted essentially to extinction by the 17th century. While breeding and rewilding efforts have been successful, the birds no longer knew the route to migrate for the winter. The Waldrappteam acts as foster parents and flight instructors for the Central European population in the hopes of teaching the birds how to fly to warmer areas. This year marks the 17th journey with human guides, and the second time the route has had to end in Spain due to climate change.

Geno Smith dazzles in brief appearance in preseason finale, Seahawks beat Browns 37-33

  • By TIM BOOTH - AP Sports Writer

Geno Smith dazzled in his only series of the preseason, throwing a 21-yard touchdown pass to DK Metcalf, and the Seattle Seahawks beat the Cleveland Browns 37-33. Both teams played starters sparingly and some like Cleveland quarterback Deshaun Watson were spectators all night leaving backups to play the bulk of the preseason finale for both teams. Smith had watched from the sideline for Seattle’s first two preseason games but finally got a little on-field taste of the offense under new coordinator Ryan Grubb. Watson was among a significant number of Browns starters who watched the preseason finale from the sideline. Joel Bitonio, Amani Cooper, Jerry Jeudy, Myles Garrett, Denzel Ward and Greg Newsome II were among the starters who watched.
