"Orbis Terrarum" was sort of a stock phrase meaning "the whole earth." Even though Greek astronomers had proved long before that the Earth was (roughly) a sphere, the Romans continued in everyday speech to refer to the Earth as if it were a flat disc.

This beautiful tapestry is a woven reproduction of an early 17th Century world map originally designed by the Dutch cartographer Abraham Ortelius (1528-1622), one of the most prominent cartographers of the 16th Century. The inscription TYPUS ORBIS TERRARUM means A Representation of the World.
